A finger labyrinth
or lap labyrinth, is a labyrinth design, carved in wood, that you trace with your
finger. It functions in much the same way as a full-size walking labyrinth, (to
further relaxation, meditation and prayer) except that the user traces the path to the
center using their finger rather than their feet. For many, this combination of
movement (tracing the path) with introspection (eyes closed), is a more relaxing way to
meditate or pray. For those whose meditation or devotional practice seems demanding
or sporadic, finger labyrinths provide a unique way to bring renewed vitality and meaning
to these activities. Since 1995, we have carved our finger labyrinths using sealed and clear-finished hardwood maple (FM) and plain compressed wood, also known as MDF (PW). The finger paths in the plain compressed wood designs have a light sandy texture, especially appealing for those looking for a more tactile experience while finger walking. Finger labyrinths in this unfinished compressed wood material can be comfortably used as is or can be stained or painted with a water or oil base stain or paint; The choice is yours. Compressed wood is made from recycled wood products and therefore is a wonderful "green living" alternative to harvesting additional trees. Having a smoother finger path than
the plain compressed wood, our sealed and clear finished maple designs are ideal for those
environments where being able to clean/sanitize between uses is important such as in a
hospital, nursing home, elementary school etc. Many people also enjoy the natural
wood grain that beautifully shows through in this material.
12" Single Cretan Finger Labyrinth (Classical 7-Circuit) This is the oldest (3000 years or more), simplest and most widely used labyrinth pattern in the world. It is believed to have its origins on the Isle of Crete. With its 7 interconnecting paths, this pattern associates well with the 7 major Chakras for contemplative and healing purposes. Being 12" round, and weighing only 2 lbs., this labyrinth easily fits into briefcases, suitcases and is the perfect take along. It is also a tool for those who may lack strength and mobility such as small children and nursing home residents.
This pattern is the most popular design in North America and is based on the famous labyrinth that was inlaid into the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France in the 13th Century. Many people travel to this Notre Dame cathedral to walk this pattern, however, chairs usually cover it. This design is significantly longer to traverse than the Cretan, and therefore the journey to the center oftentimes will be deeper and more introspective. This design is 18" round, and weighs 5 pounds.
![]() finished maple plain compressed wood (MDF) 12" Ely Cathedral Finger Labyrinth This unusual labyrinth pattern is found inlaid into the tile floor of Ely Cathedral located just outside of London, England. Ely is a more modern labyrinth constructed by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1870 during his restoration of the cathedral. As a finger labyrinth, the paths are more angular and winding than the Cretan or Chartres, and longer to the center (like the Chartres) in only a 12-inch space and weighing just 2 pounds.
Intuipaths®
(Unique & Versatile Two-Handed/Two-Person Finger Labyrinths) Relax4Life developed, trademarked and holds a patent on these unique patterns based originally on their counseling work with people experiencing life-affirming conditions. IntuipathsŇ offer the versatility and benefit of owning a double finger labyrinth design that can be used as either a single-person, two-handed labyrinth (helping to stimulate and balance both the right and left sides of the brain together) or as a two-person, single-handed labyrinth (to enhance the intuitive communication and connection between people.) As a single-person, two-handed design, both sides of the brain begin to work as one and enhanced relaxation and creativity often results. There is also some indication that working with this pattern may assist functioning in conditions such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, Stroke etc.). Using it as a two-person design offers a way for the usual barriers to communication (in both casual and formal settings) to break down while enhancing the intuitive connection. This happens through improved mental relaxation and focus on the part of both participants.
